Study says iridium isotopes carcinogenic: court
BIS Director asked to appear before court on June 27
Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Thursday observed that the Central and State governments should be alert to the health hazards arising from the mixing of iridium and ruthenium with gold in ornaments by manufacturers.
The Bench of Justice A.K. Basheer and P.Q. Barkathli pointed out that as per a study, the isotopes of iridium were highly carcinogenic. It was unfortunate that the issue had not been given priority.
The court made the observation while hearing a case initiated suo motu on the basis of a letter in this regard.
The Director, Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS), in an affidavit, submitted that an amendment proposed to the BIS Act was in limbo owing to differences of opinion between the Union Ministries of Commerce and Consumer Affairs.
The proposed amendment mandated that gold alloys used for making ornaments and artefacts should be free of iridium and ruthenium.
BIS stance
The Director said the hallmarking of gold ornaments was voluntary and, therefore, no action could be taken against jewellers who did not do hallmarking.
The court impleaded the Ministries of Commerce and Consumer Affairs as respondents and directed the Director, BIS, Thiruvananthapuram, to appear before the court on June 27.
